The other day I was reminded of Bonnie Langston, a woman I worked with at the Daily Freeman in Kingston, NY. Actually, I was thinking about her car’s bumper sticker: Practice Random Acts of Kindness.
I was cleaning off the clutter buildup on my desk when I came across one of the few actual photos I have at Bagram. Looking at it always puts a smile on my face. It was of Rae Balog and her family.
When I first arrived in Bagram, there was a table in the headquarters area that would have various care packages sitting had people sent. One day I was looking for a book or a snack when I came across a letter at the bottom of a box. It was from the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School. So I went to the Post Exchange (PX) bought a flag and had it flown here in Afghanistan for the school. I wrote a thank you letter for thinking about us soldiers in Afghanistan and mailed it off.
Sometime later, she and the school wrote a thank you letter back to me with the picture.
Since then I’ve sent out scores of flags. Then there is just the passing out of candy and cookies to the various lower enlisted. Leaving boxes of candy canes at the MWR. Operation Pumpkin Pie was successful (many a postal worker hefted boxes of pumpkin pie filling) and many boxes were then sent to the troops in the field.
Well, what I am saying is I have been enjoying my part of “Random Acts of Kindness.”
‘Tis the Season, give it a try. Hopefully, it will bring joy into your heart as it has mine.
